There's something to be said for Kitchen Table Wisdom - you know, like in the old days when people sat around the kitchen table after a meal and talked about life, the universe and the meaning of it all - as well as the gossip doing the rounds in town...

Well, that's what this place is - a place to share common wisdom, thoughts and feelings about things important and unimportant, that bring us joy, laughter and happiness and that trouble, sadden, confuse and anger us ...

What I write here is what's 'real' for me. It won't always be PC or 'nice'. We're missing out on true connection and chances to grow and change because there's too little authenticity, too little honesty, too much holding back what we really feel and mean.

Welcome to my world...

I used to have a copyright claim here, but I've removed it...

Ideas don't belong to anyone -

they come to those who are receptive and are to be used for the well being of all...

I find images and movies and music all over the web

and I use them to accent/expand on my thoughts and understandings...

‎"Plus ça change...

... plus c'est la même chose!"

January, 1795
by Mary Darby Robinson

Pavement slipp'ry, people sneezing,
Lords in ermine, beggars freezing;
Titled gluttons dainties carving,
Genius in a garret starving.

Lofty mansions, warm and spacious;
Courtiers clinging and voracious;
Misers scarce the wretched heeding;
Gallant soldiers fighting, bleeding.

Wives who laugh at passive spouses;
Theatres, and meeting-houses;
Balls, where simp'ring misses languish;
Hospitals, and groans of anguish.

Arts and sciences bewailing;
Commerce drooping, credit failing;
Placemen mocking subjects loyal;
Separations, weddings royal.

Authors who can't earn a dinner;
Many a subtle rogue a winner;
Fugitives for shelter seeking;
Misers hoarding, tradesmen breaking.

Taste and talents quite deserted;
All the laws of truth perverted;
Arrogance o'er merit soaring;
Merit silently deploring.

Ladies gambling night and morning ;
Fools the works of genius scorning ;
Ancient dames for girls mistaken,
Youthful damsels quite forsaken.

Some in luxury delighting;
More in talking than in fighting;
Lovers old, and beaux decrepid;
Lordlings empty and insipid.

Poets, painters, and musicians;
Lawyers, doctors, politicians:
Pamphlets, newspapers, and odes,
Seeking fame by diff'rent roads.

Gallant souls with empty purses;
Gen'rals only fit for nurses;
School-boys, smit with martial spirit,
Taking place of vet'ran merit.

Honest men who can't get places,
Knaves who shew unblushing faces;
Ruin hasten'd, peace retarded;
Candour spurn'd, and art rewarded...

Metamorphosis

Well, I've started several posts over the past 2.5 months and not completed any of them... they're still sitting in the "draft" queue and I don't know if they will ever appear, which is something of a shame because they've got great images and music and some almost profound(!) thoughts...

But there you go.... that's metamorphosis for you...

"When Gregor Samsa woke up one morning from unsettling dreams, he found himself changed in his bed into a monstrous vermin."

Kafka's masterpiece, The Metamorphosis, is the story of a young man who, transformed overnight into a giant insect, becomes an object of disgrace to his family, an outsider in his own home, a quintessentially alienated man.

Metamorphosis - a process of transformation, change from one state of being to another, which for me has defied clear articulation...

Not even sure I can now describe the process, or what the outcome is shaping up to be.... think I'm at the point where the butterfly has emerged, but its wings haven't yet dried enough to fly...

It was about cutting the final ties that bind me to the material world, as it manifests itself on this planet... casting myself adrift, deliberately, knowing there is no going back...

It was very intense and disorienting... a bit like the feelings I experienced when my parents died, one in 1994 and the other in 1995... Although I was an adult in my late 30s, with three children of my own, I felt I had been orphaned and left quite without any anchor/safe harbour in the world...

Some phrases that are relevant:

I no longer recognise or answer to any authority outside of myself...

We all are at war.... there is a war going on within each of us, and on the entire planet, between expansion and contraction, love and fear...

I had known that intellectually, but had not accepted it emotionally or spiritually - which was BIG and hard!

And it's time to pick a side.... not choosing is still picking a side... and I have picked a side...

I have no attachment to this society/culture we live in... it is dysfunctional to the core and I no longer resonate with it... I have to create a way to live outside it...

I will live my life as I see fit, according to my understanding of Divine harmony and balance, not man-made laws...

I know there are consequences that come with making that choice, and I accept them in full awareness...

Rejecting the status quo brings with it "push back", but I cannot live an authentic life without rejecting the status quo... and it will kill me to live inauthentically...

I have come to understand that all "awake and aware" people through all time have had to make that choice and live with/through what comes next... they've known full well what would follow making that choice, and have continued anyway - and that's what I have to do... AND I ACCEPT THAT... AND THE FEAR IS GONE... AND I FEEL SOLID...

...and now that I have that clear in my soul, heart and head, I expect my external world to change - AS ABOVE, SO BELOW, AS WITHIN, SO WITHOUT...

I wonder what it will look like...

Two Teachers & A Microphone...

Rapping about the oligarchy's attempt to seize control of public education in the US...

Actually, it's more than an attempt to take over public education - it's total war on democracy and this is the penultimate battle of that war...

Living, Loving: Woody-style...

Haven't disappeared off the face of the earth in the past three weeks or so...

Just a HUGE unfolding going on internally and am feeling/seeing how to express that in the outside world...

Almost ready to talk/write about it...

In the meantime... here's Woody...

I sometimes feel like an alien creature
for which there is no earthly explanation
Sure I have human form
walking erect and opposing digits,
but my mind is upside down.
I feel like a run-on sentence
in a punctuation crazy world.
and I see the world around me
like a mad collective dream.

An endless stream of people
move like ants from the freeway
cell phones, pc’s, and digital displays
“In Money We Trust,”
we’ll find happiness
the prevailing attitude;
like a genetically modified irradiated Big Mac
is somehow symbolic of food.

Morality is legislated
prisons over-populated
religion is incorporated
the profit-motive has permeated all activity
we pay our government to let us park on the street
And war is the biggest money-maker of all
we all know missile envy only comes from being small.

Politicians and prostitutes
are comfortable together
I wonder if they talk about the strange change in the weather.
This government was founded by, of, and for the people
but everybody feels it
like a giant open sore
they don’t represent us anymore
And blaming the President for the country’s woes
is like yelling at a puppet
for the way it sings
Who’s the man behind the curtain pulling the strings?

A billion people sitting watching their TV
in the room that they call living
but as for me
I see living as loving
and since there is no loving room
I sit on the grass under a tree
dreaming of the way things used to be
Pre-Industrial Revolution
which of course is before the rivers and oceans, and skies were polluted
before Parkinson’s, and mad cows
and all the convoluted cacophony of bad ideas
like skyscrapers, and tree paper, and earth rapers
like Monsanto and Dupont had their way
as they continue to today.

This was Pre-us
back when the buffalo roamed
and the Indian’s home
was the forest, and God was nature
and heaven was here and now
Can you imagine clean water, food, and air
living in community with animals and people who care?

Do you dare to feel responsible for every dollar you lay down
are you going to make the rich man richer
or are you going to stand your ground
You say you want a revolution
a communal evolution
to be a part of the solution
maybe I’ll be seeing you around

By The Left...Quick...March!

March... named after Mars, the Roman god of war, storms and tempests...

March... first month of Spring in the northern hemisphere, and first month of Autumn (Fall) in the southern...

March... first month of Spring was the logical first month of the year and the start of the military campaign season.

Operation Iraqi Freedom, a military campaign began on 20th March, 2003

March... famous for the Ides of March, the 15th day, the full moon, on which Julius Caesar was assassinated...

It used to be that August and September were months of endings and beginnings in my life - moves overseas and returns, births of children...

But for the last 15 years, it seems that March is the month of change...

March 1996 I took my 3 older children from New Zealand to Australia...

March 2004 I came with my youngest to the US from Australia...

March 2008 we moved from one house to another here in Seattle - long story, but the new house was our first 'home' here and we were very happy there...

March 2011 we begin yet another transition chapter in another house (our fourth), still here in Seattle...

Done with the old and wondering what the new will bring...

LYRICS:
It's a god-awful small affair
To the girl with the mousy hair
But her mummy is yelling "No"
And her daddy has told her to go
But her friend is nowhere to be seen
Now she walks through her sunken dream
To the seat with the clearest view
And she's hooked to the silver screen
But the film is a saddening bore
'Cause she's lived it ten times or more
She could spit in the eyes of fools
As they ask her to focus on

Sailors fighting in the dance hall

Oh man! Look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the Lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?

It's on Amerika's tortured brow

That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow
Now the workers have struck for fame
'Cause Lennon's on sale again
See the mice in their million hordes
From Ibiza to the Norfolk Broads
Rule Britannia is out of bounds
To my mother, my dog, and clowns
But the film is a saddening bore
'Cause I wrote it ten times or more
It's about to be writ again
As I ask you to focus on

Sailors fighting in the dance hall

Oh man! Look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the Lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?

Clarity: Part Two - Rules Are For Fools...

The law will never make men free, it is men that have to make the law free.
~ Henry David Thoreau

Me today is very different to the me that raised my first family...

I "woke up" around 1990, and with my spiritual awakening came a new way of looking at life and how we humans do 3D here on this planet...

I suddenly saw many of the incongruities, the incoherence, the dissonance we live with, enable in our daily life...

And I realised that most of the system and the rules we live by don't make any sense (other than enforcing the power over, and control of, the many by a few) and are really quite silly, if not outright toxic and damaging, and in some cases murderous...

For example...

"Thou shalt not kill... but if you kill someone else, we reserve the right to kill you...

and,

we reserve the right to conscript you and send you off to war to kill and injure people you have never met and against whom you have no personal beef...

Oh, and if you refuse to go where we send you and do that, or you run away from it because it's all too much and too horrible, we will punish you, even kill you - THAT'S RIGHT, WE'LL EVEN KILL YOU IF YOU REFUSE TO KILL OTHERS..."

Either life is sacred or it's not... make up your mind, world...

Then there's the fact that absolutely every single situation in life is different - happening at a different time, in a different place, to different people, in different circumstances, driven by different causes and motivations...

If every one of us on the planet saw the same event, we would have 6B+ different versions of that event, 6B+ different sets of beliefs about the morality or otherwise of whatever is playing out...

There is no black and white - everything is grey... and so it seems to me to be pointless to have set in stone a bunch of rules that must apply in all scenarios,  and which never have scope and flexibility built in to take into account complexity and context...

When I lived in Brisbane, I hung out with a bunch of women wanting to live authentic lives... real women... and one of the teachings/truths we were examining in our practice of being real was:

... guidelines are for the wise ...

Most of us have grown up accepting society's laws and rules by osmosis, never consciously looking at what they mean, where and why they originated, whether they're about safety or about maintaining power and control, whether we have ever been asked for our agreement to these strictures being placed on us as free human beings...

As far as I can tell, rules and laws were created by the few powerful 'haves' to protect themselves and their possessions from the many powerless 'have nots', making refusal, rebellion and revolution difficult...

Think about it... we're living in a world where there's no longer any sense of community, of clan or tribe, of working together and sharing resources and the product of that work.

We're each responsible for providing for ourselves, regardless of the circumstances.

And we've developed a system of trade, even of the basic necessities of life,  where goods pass through many hands from creator to consumer, and at each point of exchange become more expensive, with the final "buyer" paying much more than the creator received for the initial transaction.

Imagine a man or woman has no food for his/her hungry children, and is standing in front of a bakery looking at a loaf of bread;  this parent has no money (method of energy exchange) and no goods or services to trade for that loaf of bread in the window...

In other societal and economic structures, the community would have planted the seed, grown and harvested the wheat and made the bread together, and would have shared the fruits of their labours...

There's an order of Divine versus earthly logic that applies here...

Is it more of a "crime" to let one's children go hungry than it is to take (without offering immediate exchange) a loaf of bread that will alleviate that hunger?

Who does the law "thou shalt not steal" protect in this case?   The  most vulnerable in our community, or those who already are provided for?   Surely if the loaf of bread is up for sale, that means it's "surplus to requirements," as they say, and the "owner" already has plenty for his/her own needs?

Our forebears, at some point determined that taking something without exchange, even to feed the hungry, is an offence, punishable by imprisonment, whipping, having limbs amputated, enslavement, banishment and exile, and sometimes death...

And we still say all "stealing" is wrong, no matter what the circumstances leading up to the decision to take something without offering an immediate exchange...

This denies the fact that all of life is a circle, a connected web, where energy (money, food, love, caring, action) flows around the circle and will eventually come back to us...the return will not often be directly reciprocal, but it does return - all major spiritual traditions remind us of that...

When I was growing up in New Zealand, I remember hearing about the butter  and wheat mountains, that the west had, while at the same time we were reminded daily on our television screens about the plight of the starving children of Biafra...

40 years on and nothing has changed... we still have people and governments sitting on food to force the price to rise, while billions starve...

EU butter mountain to return

The European Union's notorious butter mountains and milk lakes are to return after a controversial decision to reintroduce dairy subsidies.

The European Commission has announced plans to artificially boost prices by buying up 139,000 tonnes of diary products at a cost to the public purse of £237 million.
From March 1 until the end of August, the EU will become the owner of 30,000 tonnes of butter and 109,000 tonnes of skimmed powder milk, paid for at above market cost to support the dairy industry.
The EU is has also agreed to begin new export subsidies for European butter, milk powder and butteroil.
Export subsidies and EU food stocks were last used in 2007 and the Commission last year tried to scrap such payments, a reform that was blocked by France and Germany.
Commission officials have played down the measure as a temporary move after a steep slide in milk prices triggered a 33 per cent decline in butter exports last year.

- Butter Mountain To Return

Which is really the "crime"?   Being reduced to live in circumstances where one has to "take" what one needs for survival, or with-holding the basic necessities of life because the "price" is too low?

And we have fooled ourselves into thinking that some deity set these rules into place, that they are sacred in some way...

I can't find it within me to believe that an infinite, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, all loving Divine Essence would see life in such a limited perspective...

Or that it would contradict itself by decreeing "thou shalt not kill" and then order Abraham to sacrifice his son to prove his loyalty/faith,

or that it would kill all life on earth except Noah and the other occupants of the ark...

Just as I can't find it within me to accept the logic that one must ALWAYS stop at a red light...

What if I have a passenger in the car who is in the middle of having a heart attack?

The light ahead turns red... there are no other cars in the intersection and none in view approaching...

Should I stop for the red light and wait obediently for it to turn to green?

Or does DIVINE LOGIC decree that this person's life, which is endangered, is more important than a "rule" that says: "Thou shalt always stop at a red light"?

How often do you think about the choices you are being asked/expected to make every day, and about what unconscious beliefs you hold about how the world works?

Do you ask yourself what are the "rules" you give conscious consent to following, every time you have to make a decision?

I believe that the purpose of living in this world is for each of us to come into our own sovereignty, to actualise ourselves as fully evolved humans, making the best, most conscious choices for ourselves (and the highest good) at every moment.

And that means we have to wake up and learn to think for ourselves... take responsibility for our lives and be willing to be held accountable...

Our world discourages us from that.   It exists in its current form through the manipulation of the many by a few, to maintain the paradigm of power and control...

And if too many of us "wake up", we will exercise our power and will no longer be able to be controlled...

“Know the rules well,
so you can break them effectively.”

  ~ Dalai Lama XIV

PS:
My friend Janice (who's using crutches) today posted on Facebook her experience of being made to wait 20 minutes by the bus driver, at the bus stop, outside in the cold, until she was "officially" allowed to board the bus...

I replied that it's a sad day when common sense and compassion are over-ridden by "rules"...

And thinking about it, the lack of common sense and compassion and the imposition by others of silly 'rules' are the reasons we can't stay where we are living now, any longer...

Thanks Janice, for creating the space for me to see that!

This Is How Wars Start...

I'm sitting here at my computer at 4.45am on Saturday morning (had to get up to give a cat food and water and then let it out), dressed and cold  because the temperature in the house is 55 (12.7C), wanting to work, but needing first to figure out how to open the lock box my housemates put on the thermostat while we were out yesterday, because they think that it's unreasonable to want the temperature to be at 68-70 (20C) to be comfortable... F**K!
I can't find the key (they've hidden it) and it's too early to make a noise by breaking the lock box (and Connor would be scared shitless by the "violence" of that, considering what he saw/heard/experienced when we were living with his father)...
What to do?
We share this house with another family - a 60-year old mother and her 31-year old son and 20-year old daughter.
I'm not being unreasonable about wanting to be warm... 68F is not unreasonable; I have physical issues that require that I stay warm but not by dressing like an Inuit going out into a blizzard!

I'm not the crazy person here; my housemate's justification for wanting it this cold is that she spent several years living in Fairbanks, Alaska, while her son boasts about spending two winters living in an unlined, unheated garage - that's the part that's not normal!

I spent two years living in Singapore in the mid-70s, and then eight years living in Brisbane before we came to the US; Singapore and Brisbane are tropical and sub-tropical cities...

Should I insist that the whole house be kept at 75F (24C) because that's what I'm used to and most comfortable at?
This is not just a thing about personal comfort and preferences and not wanting to pay for high heating costs - this is about power and control; just what I left Connor's father for...

We had an agreement - 68F in the day and 55F at night... and they were angry I woke up and was working at 5.30am yesterday (Friday) and had raised the temp from 55F...

The son (who lives downstairs), says he had warned me that if I turned the temperature up to 70 he was going to put a lock box on the thermostat, and they have a log they've been keeping to prove I did on 4 or 5 occasions over the past month turn the heat up to 70 (the temperature gauge is in two degree increments, so there is no real separation between 68 and 70)...

This is the second time in two months my housemates have done an end-run around me to get things to be the way they want them to be - leaving me with no options to act without making things worse....

Last time, they were angry I was taking too long to unpack and settle in, and that our bedrooms are a mess.

One day, again when we were out for the day, they put the remainder of my boxes (which were neatly stacked in a corner of the lounge) downstairs, in the garage and hung all their artwork on the walls, leaving no space for mine, and nothing for me to do to even things out - anything I did would have seemed petty...

Their contribution to the dialogue was sarcasm: "oh, we're sorry we got so enthused about cleaning up that we just kept going and took care of your mess - it's been here long enough"...   How do you respond constructively to that?

What to do, seeing we can't right now just pack up and leave - that will take time...

Pilger On Obama & The Hidden Government

How often do we have to hear the message, see the evidence for our own eyes, before we decide enough is enough and we're not going to take it any more?

What A Wonderful World?

How can these two such very different realities exist in the same time and space?

All this, just so we can learn about the illusion of duality and separation?

The Wonderful World:

LYRICS:

I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.

The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do
They're really saying I love you.

I hear babies cry, I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than I'll never know
And I think to myself what a wonderful world
Yes I think to myself what a wonderful world.
