There Is Another Way...

Well, there's more than one way to live better than we currently are doing under capitalism...

Here's just one set of ideas.... 

It's not all fantasy either...

From Wikipedia's entry on Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983):

"Buckminster Fuller was one of the first to propagate a systemic worldview, and he explored principles of energy and material efficiency in the fields of architecture, engineering and design.

 

He cited François de Chardenedes' opinion that petroleum, from the standpoint of its replacement cost out of our current energy "budget" (essentially, the net incoming solar flux), had cost nature "over a million dollars" per U.S. gallon (US$300,000 per litre) to produce. From this point of view, its use as a transportation fuel by people commuting to work represents a huge net loss compared to their earnings.   An encapsulating quotation of his views might be: "There is no energy crisis, only a crisis of ignorance."

 
Fuller was concerned about sustainability and about human survival under the existing socio-economic system, yet remained optimistic about humanity's future. 

 

Defining wealth in terms of knowledge, as the "technological ability to protect, nurture, support, and accommodate all growth needs of life," his analysis of the condition of "Spaceship Earth" caused him to conclude that at a certain time during the 1970s, humanity had attained an unprecedented state. 

 

He was convinced that the accumulation of relevant knowledge, combined with the quantities of major recyclable resources that had already been extracted from the earth, had attained a critical level, such that competition for necessities was not necessary anymore.    Cooperation had become the optimum survival strategy. "Selfishness," he declared, "is unnecessary and hence-forth unrationalizable.... War is obsolete."

 

He criticized previous utopian schemes as too exclusive, and thought this was a major source of their failure. To work, he thought that a utopia needed to include everyone."

And Robert Theobald, (1929-1999), also saw another way out of the capitalist trap.   

 

Robert was a private consulting economist and futurist author.   In economics, he was best known for his writings on the economics of abundance and his advocacy of a Basic Income Guarantee.

 

He was a member of the Ad Hoc Committee on the Triple Revolution in 1964, and later listed in the top 10 most influential living futurists in The Encyclopedia of the Future.

 

Robert said: "My goal is to create a situation of full unemployment--a world in which people do not have to hold a job. And I believe that this kind of world can actually be achieved."

Can you say the current paradigm is working well for you, all the other humans with whom we share this world, and the planet herself? 

If we're not one of the comparative handful of people holding all the power and control currently, what have we got to lose in trying something different?

Lost Horizon...

I was 15 when this came out... full of romantic notions about life and love...

Magical Thinking...

Two days in a row of going off-track ... 

And that's cool - my child's emotional needs superseded a bureaucratic task yesterday and today a call to help take another stand against public education "deform" pushed that bureaucratic agenda back into next Monday...

But - lots of energy going out and not a lot of 3D, measurable results coming back in, at least not immediately...

Time to call on the mythic creatures to bring some magic and positive energy into the arena of my life...

Do you believe in any of these creatures?   Many, many cultures have stories of mythical beings and they often share very similar characteristics and qualities even though the cultures are separated by vast quantities of time and space...

One of the realisations I was given on my shamanic journey, is that everything already exists... if you can imagine it, it exists...

And the analogy I was given for that was to think about a furniture maker who wants to design a completely new chair.   

He/she has the image of a completely new chair design in his/her imagination/mind...   

Does that chair exist if he/she hasn't drawn it yet, hasn't begun to make it out of raw materials, hasn't brought it into 3D?   In my teachings, it does...

So if all cultures around the world have mythical beings and similar versions of these mythical beings appear across cultures, could they have been real at some point in our history?   Could they be real now?

When I was about 12, an American series was playing on Saturday afternoon television in New Zealand... on cold, wet, wintry Saturday afternoons...

And it had this catchy tune, and gorgeous men and spirited women, and lots of romanticism and denial about what life was really like in a logging town in the early days of settlement in the pacific north west...

And I had a crush on David Soul (and his character)...

Loved the theme music, believed the words...

If you had told me then that 32 years or so later I would move to Seattle to be with the father of my youngest son, I would not have believed you...

But I did... a long story best saved for another place and time... 

BUT... what I do have to say is:

"Liar, Liar Pants on Fire - the bluest skies you've ever seen are not in Seattle... and the hills are not the greenest green in Seattle either!"...

Actually - the hills are very green in Seattle, but that's because of all the rain... maybe 180-200 days of rain and/or grey skies a year, whereas in Brisbane Australia, it's 300 days of sunshine and 65 days of rain.   

Brisbane's in the state of Queensland and its tourism marketing board has a branding tagline which, for once, does not exaggerate: 

"Queensland - beautiful one day, perfect the next!"
