There's something to be said for Kitchen Table Wisdom - you know, like in the old days when people sat around the kitchen table after a meal and talked about life, the universe and the meaning of it all - as well as the gossip doing the rounds in town...

Well, that's what this place is - a place to share common wisdom, thoughts and feelings about things important and unimportant, that bring us joy, laughter and happiness and that trouble, sadden, confuse and anger us ...

What I write here is what's 'real' for me. It won't always be PC or 'nice'. We're missing out on true connection and chances to grow and change because there's too little authenticity, too little honesty, too much holding back what we really feel and mean.

Some Are Born Awake...

Sometimes I envy those born after me... so many seem to be born "awake and aware" and committed from birth to living their truth.

They recognise the BS (bullshit) wherever it exists and appear to be unafraid of calling it for what it is...

It SEEMS to me that for many of my generation (and previous ones), that awakening came later in life and consequently with a more difficult weaning/turning away from the dream/illusion...

The young give me joy, hope and inspiration... I am so proud of them...

LYRICS:

that I would be good even if I did nothing

that I would be good even if I got the thumbs down
that I would be good if I got and stayed sick
that I would be good even if I gained ten pounds

that I would be fine even if I went bankrupt

that I would be good if I lost my hair and my youth
that I would be great if I was no longer queen
that I would be grand if I was not all knowing

that I would be loved even when I numb myself

that I would be good even when I am overwhelmed
that I would be loved even when I was fuming
that I would be good even if I was clingy

that I would be good even if I lost sanity

that I would be good
whether with or without you

LYRICS:

I recommend getting your heart trampled on to anyone
I recommend walking around naked in your living room
Swallow it down (what a jagged little pill)
It feels so good (swimming in your stomach)
Wait until the dust settles

You live you learn
You love you learn
You cry you learn
You lose you learn
You bleed you learn
You scream you learn

I recommend biting off more then you can chew to anyone
I certainly do
I recommend sticking your foot in your mouth at any time
Feel free
Throw it down (the caution blocks you from the wind)
Hold it up (to the rays)
You wait and see when the smoke clears

You live you learn
You love you learn
You cry you learn
You lose you learn
You bleed you learn
You scream you learn

Wear it out (the way a three-year-old would do)
Melt it down (you're gonna have to eventually anyway)
The fire trucks are coming up around the bend

You live you learn
You love you learn
You cry you learn
You lose you learn
You bleed you learn
You scream you learn

You grieve you learn
You choke you learn
You laugh you learn
You choose you learn
You pray you learn
You ask you learn
You live you learn

LYRICS:

Do you derive joy when someone else succeeds?
Do you not play dirty when engaged in competition?
Do you have a big intellectual capacity but know
that it alone does not equate to wisdom?
Do you see everything as an illusion
but enjoy it even though you are not of it?
Are you both masculine and feminine, politically aware, and don't believe in capital punishment?

These are 21 things that I want in a lover
Not necessarily needs but qualities that I prefer

Do you derive joy from diving in and seeing that
loving someone can actually feel like freedom? Are you funny and self-deprecating, like adventure, and have many formed opinions?

These are 21 things that I want in a lover
Not necessarily needs but qualities that I prefer
I figure I can describe it since I have a choice in the matter
These are 21 things I choose to choose in a lover

I'm in no hurry; I could wait forever
I'm in no rush cause I like being solo
There are no worries and certainly no pressure In the meantime I'll live like there's no tomorrow

Are you uninhibited in bed, more than three times a week, up for being experimental?
Are you athletic?
Are you thriving in a job that helps your brother?
Are you not addicted?

These are 21 things that I want in a lover
Not necessarily needs but qualities that I prefer
I figure I can describe it since I have a choice in the matter
These are 21 things I choose to choose in a lover

Empathy, Spirituality & Englightenment

RSA Animate has some wonderful short videos presenting complex ideas in clear terms...

Black Friday Special: The Story of Stuff...

Here in the US, there's a day called Black Friday... and no, it's not called that because it's a Friday the 13th...

It's the Friday after Thanksgiving, when Americans are urged, encouraged, enticed, manipulated, pressured to go on an orgy of spending (using money they don't have) so that retail receipts/profits can go into the "black"... and it marks the lead-up to the gross excess that is Christmas here...

It appears few people question why we would need all this "stuff".   Does it add to our quality of life, does it fulfill us, does it fill a hole in our lives, in our selves, in our souls?

Now here's something you might like to know about the origins, creation and final destination of all that "stuff"...

Will this make a difference to your choices this year?

Time to Breathe Again (and Create Your Unlimited Life!)

45-minute teaching session offered each Tuesday, focusing on the practice and benefits of breath work, and uncovering limiting core beliefs and self-sabotaging patterns of thinking, choice-making and behavior.

We'll be discussing what, how and why you think, do and say what you do, what are your expectations of yourself and life and what keeps you from reaching your full potential.

We won't just be sitting around; we'll also use experiential exercises to get to profound, deeply personal understandings.

Here's what other participants have said:

"Breathing with Sahila changed my life. I did breath work with Sahila for several months and after each session, I felt like all the stresses in my life had been offloaded and I could go back into the world with a clear mind. Our sessions together were great. Sahila has a wealth of life knowledge so by talking with her and breathing I was able to shift my thinking about my family, myself and my life path and really become OK with who I AM which allowed me to let others be who they are....it is so freeing! Sahila is an amazing person and anyone who works with her will be better for it." - Michelle

"The 2 hour group breathe with Sahila brought me the understanding and insight of the importance of breathe work. The week following my breathe I felt more energized, more connected to my body, and ...felt like I had undergone a great detox! It has brought awareness of daily breathing to the forefront and I look forward to my next breathe session." - Carrie

"I have done breath work with Sahila years ago in Australia and have learnt so much about staying in the present moment and observing myself doing me. I am only sad that she is overseas and we do not have instant access to this amazing teacher and healer!" - Bronwyn

So, if your life isn't going as well as you'd like and you need new ideas, strategies and tools to change that, come and check out what I have to offer.

Speak Nicely and Say Nothing?

I've written many times before that the demand for 'civil discourse' misses the point and is more often than not a demand that people with uncomfortable things to say simply "shut up".   See here, from another writer:

" There is an unfortunate tendency to assume that civil discourse has occurred whenever two or more people are nice to each other, say something, and don’t get into an argument. That is misleading on all three counts.

Civil discourse has not occurred if boundaries have not been crossed.

Civil discourse has not occurred if boundaries that define spaces of sound and spaces of silence have not been recognized and honored.

Where there is no argument, there is no civil discourse.

We must openly disagree if we are to discover what binds us together and what we can accomplish. We must talk to each other in order to disagree. We must speak honestly as well as decently, which means that we may sometimes need to say unpleasant things about each other. And about ourselves."

Is Civil Disobedience Compassion in Action?

What are your responsibilities as an "awake and aware" social activist?

For a while now, I've been impatient with, and frustrated by, what I see as wishy-washy responses to what's going on in the world by people who claim to be compassionate social activists...

These people criticise my perspectives and actions, saying there's no place for anger in creating a peaceful future.   They suggest that giving energy to the negative will increase it and that focusing on the positive will undo all that is so damaging in our world.

I can't buy into that attitude/belief system.

I think there's a place for righteous anger and action to call attention to the things that are hurtful in our society.   Jesus got pretty angry with the merchants in the temple and with those who wanted to stone the adulterous woman.   Gandhi wasn't shy in expressing his anger at the British ruling India.  Martin Luther King was pretty vocal - blunt in fact - in demanding equal rights for African Americans.   Mother Teresa didn't soft-pedal on the poverty and disease killing women and children in India...

In my opinion, those who say we should concentrate on the positive are in denial about what is really going on; they're overwhelmed by the imbalance in the world and are too scared to confront it.   If they did really face it, what would that require them to DO?   Would they be required to put it all on the line, risk losing their place on the ladder if they really named what is going on?  If we name it and label it as unjust, don't we then have to own our complicity in the status quo, stop enabling, stop participating in the system that's creating and continuing this imbalance?

So how far should we go, then, in confronting injustice in our society?

Does Evil Exist?

(Repost from 28 June 2010)
I was privileged to lead a breath work session yesterday...

And part of the session included a discussion about the identity and nature of the Life  Force (am staying away from terms such as God/Goddess etc, which are loaded, exclusionary, inaccurate and based in our human need to set in place a hierarchy of power and to anthropomorphise everything we don't understand!)...

Under the holographic principle, the sum of the whole is contained in each of the parts.... so, logically, if one believes that there is an originating Life Force, which is all-knowing, all-loving, infinite and omnipotent, then by extension, as its creations each one of us is also that Life Force - all-knowing, all-loving, infinite and omnipotent... which has huge implications relating to how we see and express ourselves in the world, as powerful beings or as victims?  But that's another day's subject...

Holographic Universe

Evidence from physics and quantum mechanics show that the Observor influences any event or object of consciousness, changing the wave to a particle, the formless to form. Everything is energy. At a subatomic level, all molecules are alive, moving, and conscious. Mind is not just determinative over matter, but mind and matter seem to just be energy vibrating at different frequencies.

Which brings me to the question of whether or not Evil exists...

If one accepts the holographic premise, then Evil cannot exist because all creations of the Life Force ARE the Life Force and one would then have to say the Life Force is evil.  And some might indeed think/feel this, but wouldn't they then also have to consider themselves evil?

A secondary factor to consider is our human need to label events, situations and people, to assign a value to them such as 'good' or 'bad', 'positive' or 'negative', 'ugly' or 'beautiful', 'loving' or 'hateful', 'easy' or 'difficult' etc.

I think we do this to satisfy our need to find order in the chaos, to assign definition so that we can feel secure, so that we can establish a relative place for ourselves in the scheme of things, to give ourselves an (illusory) sense of control and power.

If we were all to be honest with ourselves, this need to label is really quite a pathetic attempt to claim our place at the centre of the universe and to give ourselves an out, an excuse when we don't live up to the sacredness we carry within ourselves!

If we look at the natural world, those value-laden terms mean nothing, have no relevance at all... Things just are...

Some humans might see lightning striking, burning and felling a tree as a negative, sad, disastrous occurrence.    However, for the natural world its just an event, signalling the end of one form of life and the beginning of another, as the felled tree trunk begins to decompose and return to the earth and in the process gives shelter and sustenance to millions of small and microscopic life forms.

So if the Life Force and its creations cannot, by definition, be evil, and if value-laden descriptors are a human construct that have no significance in the rest of creation, how then to understand the "horrifying' things that happen in our own spheres of existence, in the world, in Life?

I've come to understand this from two different perspectives.

The first stems from a meditation experience I had very early on in my spiritually "awake and aware" journey.   As part of this moment, where I experienced actually being ALL THAT EVER WAS, IS NOW AND EVER SHALL BE, I came to know that the Life Force's sole purpose was to experience itself in all of its infinite potential - a gorgeous, awe-inspiring, completely loving cosmic game of "What If..."   If I manifest as this, what happens then?    If I choose this, what follows?    A joyous, wondrous, exciting experiment in CAUSE and EFFECT in which we all are participating as co-creators, as manifestations of that Sacred Life Force.

The second "AHA" moment came in a flash of insight that was sparked by the events of 9/11, took me back to seeing biblical events in a new light and then flash-forwarded to WW2 and Adolf Hitler.

All my "AHA" moments come in the shower - sad, prosaic but true!   And in this one moment when thinking about 9/11, apart from realising that this event was a logical outcome (Effect) after years of American meddling in world affairs (Cause), including responsibility for the deaths of millions under oppressive regimes the US had covertly and overtly helped put in place, I understood that all the people involved in 9/11 had come together in this co-creation to offer us all a gift.

As well as playing out whatever needed to play out for their own and their families' journeys, the 'terrorists', the pilots, the passengers, the people in the towers, the firefighters all had given their lives so that we could make a choice about how we wanted to move on in the world.    They all had the courage to be involved in this event so that we could choose a pathway forward of love, reconciliation and co-operation, not more war and death and misery.

Without the 'terrorists', this event would not have happened.   Imagine a soul - by definition all-loving because it is the Life Force - coming into this lifetime, knowing that it was going to choose and enact a path that would end in death and vilification.    Remember how acting contrary to your true nature feels like a painful, twisting inside.

Imagine those other souls, agreeing to co-create this 'painful' event, so that we would each, and as a web of interconnected beings, have the opportunity to step into a new vision of life on this planet...

Sadly, we did not take that step - instead we continued the "power over" game and began more wars.... possibly because, as Marilyn Waring and others before her have pointed out, war-making is a profitable business, is one tool for ensuring "economic growth".

That realisation about 9/11 spiralled my thinking back to the Bible and the place of the Life Force aspect/soul called Lucifer in the scheme of creation.

Human beings need duality to give them a sense of context and place on the continuum of life.    We need contrast to make our choices.    If Lucifer is a creation of the Life Force, IS the Life Force, then Lucifer cannot be evil, unless we accept that the Life Force is evil.    The soul that is Lucifer is serving us in the highest manner possible, giving each of us every day the chance to make choices - life sustaining choices or life destroying choices, choices which expand us further into all we can be or contract and diminish us.

Which then led to the thought that Judas Iscariot also was a hero in the story of the life of the man called Jesus Christ.    Without the 'betrayal' by Judas, the Crucifixion would not have happened, nor the Resurrection, and Christ would not have been able to show us in such a dramatic fashion that we have the choice to live life in a different, more loving manner.

Which then led me to think about all the other 'evil' people in earth's human history, with Adolf Hitler coming most prominently to mind.   Again, Adolf Hitler's choices and actions opened the door for us as a species to decide to change our ways.

I think it was an act of courage and service to us all, for the soul that manifested as Adolf Hitler and all the souls that manifested as the victims and fallen of the Holocaust and WW2 to do what they did.   (And I say these things with respect, from the vantage point of being Dutch and having had my parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles all experience life under the Nazis during WW2)...

Unfortunately, the meaning and impact of those acts of courage seem to have been lost/wasted on us...

Because now we have the BP oil spill and the G8/G20 meetings and protesters, another opportunity to listen to each other, to learn from example and experience, to step into a new, holistic, loving way of being for all life forms on this planet... and there doesn't seem to be much momentum for change being enacted - lots of talk, yes, but action?   No...

Are we a lost cause, this human species?   Is that where the Evil really exists?

PS: Or are we only “lost” in this universe/reality?    Given the multi-dimensional nature of creation, with parallel realities and universes co-existing in the eternal NOW, are all the choices we didn't make in our 'now' playing out in other infinite Life lines?

Finding & Living Your Own Spiritual Truth

I'm a shaman...

At some point on my journey, I felt I was being asked to choose whether I wanted to be apprenticed to a particular lineage of teachings or whether I was going to walk this path as a solo practitioner...

I chose to walk my own path.

I've studied religions/spiritual traditions from many cultures; at heart, they each say the same thing - the only real difference is the terminology...

I've taken from those teachings what feels 'true' to what I've personally experienced on a mystic level,  I've synthesised what I've learned and now have my own world view that works for me...

That's all that's important really - whatever works to connect me with the Divine and whatever works for you;  all the rest is about power and control and inserting an artificial (and unnecessary) intermediary between humans, the rest of life and the Sacred...

The Key to the Door at 51

I think/feel like I am finally an adult - at the ripe young(old?) age of 51!

Until a couple of years ago, I still felt like I was 17 on the inside... that I was faking/bluffing my way through life and that I'd be caught out soon!  And it was always such a puzzling experience to see the face and body in the mirror that didn't match up with the felt/mental/emotional sense of self...

I would never have believed anyone who told me my life would be like it is today - never in a million years.  I thought I'd still be married to my first husband, watching the grown kids produce their offspring, sitting by the fire like Derby and Joan.  In fact, close friends cried when I left that relationship because it seemed so 'perfect' from the outside (think they cried because when I stopped pretending that it was working for us, they realised they were in deep s**t!!!).

And now here I am with three grown kids far away and a 6.5 year old from a second brief relationship, in a new country, and I think - how the heck did I get here?

I was joking with women friends the other day that I wanted my life back... that I closed my eyes for a second and it kinda slipped off into another dimension... could just see it sliding by... Was joking that I wanted to tell the universe that OK, enough's enough, can I have it back now please!!! They too have a lot of very 'out of the so-called norm' stuff happening in their lives and also want to know what happened in those few moments when they took their eye off the ball...

BUT... if I leave off attaching descriptors like 'good' and 'bad' to the experience, its been the most amazing journey...

I'm into looking at things on multiple levels and there's so much going on in terms of it being an exploration of human archetypes, of the mythic process ...

I've learned so much about myself and I see so much interconnectedness and meaning that while some of it is/has been very hard, its also very fulfilling... and I cant imagine my life having meaning any other way... and I am finally living who I really am...

No idea where this is going and how its all going to end up... have given up the need to plan and control and have almost lost the fear - well, on some days anyway!    F
or the reward of the experience, I couldn't have  planned it any better if  I had tried anyway...

The Laws of Attraction and Manifesting Abundance: The Missing Piece of the Puzzle

So many of us have been working hard on mastering the Laws of Attraction and manifesting material abundance. We have many resources available to support us in this process including books and films such as The Secret, teachers such as Abraham Hicks, Wayne Dyer, Michael Bernard Beckwith and so many others.

Some few of us are experiencing a degree of success, while many others are floundering, feeling stuck, feeling like failures because there's been no outward change in our circumstances despite all the visioning, affirmations, visualizations and trying to move our financial ‘set points’ and core beliefs about worthiness. Why might this be?

My guidance tells me that we're missing a piece of the puzzle. The concepts in the teachings are real and true. They're necessary for us to master so that we move out of our sense of victim-hood and helplessness and into our true heritage as divine, sacred, omni-creative beings –  in essence, God.

But there's another realization that needs to come once one begins to understand and play with these concepts. And that's an understanding about what true abundance is, why we want to manifest it and what are we going to do with it once we achieve that mastery?

Many of us want to manifest material abundance to fill a hole in ourselves. We want abundance to fill the hole of fear, the hole of lack, the hole of anxiety, the hole of low self confidence, the hole of separation, the hole of feeling 'less than'. We want material abundance to give us a sense of security that we're in control and safe in our world, that we'll finally be recognized as being someone worthwhile.

Unfortunately, all of these things we are chasing are illusions. All we have is the 'now', this very moment that I'm writing these words and you're reading them. This 'now' might be followed by another moment of 'now', a series of moments of 'now', but there's no guarantee of that, no foreknowledge of when the end of my physical journey will come – in the next 30 seconds or in 20 years' time.

So perhaps there's not so much sense in trying to create and store up security for the future, in amassing material abundance as a hedge against uncertainty and anxiety? Besides, how much of what we create can we fit in our coffins? How many rooms in your house can you physically occupy, in any one moment? How many pairs of shoes can you wear at any one time? How many pairs of shoes can you wear out in your lifetime? How many cars can you drive? How much food can you eat at any one meal, how many books can you read and CDs can you listen to, in any one moment?

Did you know that most indigenous people lived within their environments taking only what they needed and using every piece of whatever they took? And they did this in a sacred manner, asking permission and giving thanks to the energy that was giving up its life so that they could live.

How often do you drive by those storage complexes dotted along most major arterial roads and think about the origin of the resources spent in creating them, and about the waste of all that 'stuff' gathered inside those units? How often do you think about the feelings and life events of the people who have shut away these parts of their lives but, for whatever reason, are not ready or willing to let these aspects of themselves go? Is this where things are at with you, or someone close to you?

The greatest, most powerful manifestor ever to have lived on Earth was the man/prophet called Jesus. He performed 'miracles', turning water into wine at a wedding feast and feeding thousands at a gathering from a few loaves and fishes. But did he manifest a position of power and social acceptance for himself? Did he manifest lavish homes, an extensive wardrobe, hire servants or a donkey and cart to travel around? Did he align himself with the rich, the powerful and the merchants and extol the virtues of material possessions? He didn't. Instead, he lived a humble life, moving from moment to moment with the flow of his journey, walking lightly on the Earth, trusting that his needs would be met and giving what he could to those who had even less than he did, those needing love and healing. The Buddha walked a similar path – he gave up all his riches, all his material possessions and lived most simply. And yet he did not appear to experience lack.

My guidance tells me that yes, we can master the techniques of manifesting abundance and this is a good thing – abundance brings the capacity to have more choices. But with that power comes responsibility and a requirement to be conscious of the consequences that come with the act of creating.

When we step into our creative, manifesting power, we step into new realities or paradigms on the spiritual, intellectual and emotional levels. But we don’t step into a new physical, Planet Earth, we don’t teleport into a parallel universe, a new 3D reality. We are still living here, sharing this time and space with 6 billion other humans and countless other life forms. And this planet, energetically and physically, is a closed environment/system.

We are all connected in this web of life. What I do, what I create, what I CAUSE in my little corner of the web, has ramifications, consequences, EFFECTS in other parts of the web. According to Paul Krugman, Nobel Prize-winning economist, if the entire earth’s human population were to live as we do here in the West, we would need the resources of five or six Earths. And that’s not a possible reality we can co-create, no matter how spiritually aware, conscious, mature, adept we are.

When I take from the web more than I need in the moment, someone, something elsewhere in the web has to do without, has to pay a cost. When I buy in bulk at Sam’s Club or Costco, I am encouraged by a false sense of security and plenty to use wastefully, to forget about the natural and human energies that were spent in producing what I am using so carelessly. I am encouraged not to think about the person who was paid less than a living wage to enable me to use more than my share, more than my need in precious resources.

Some would argue that people in other parts of the world, in other parts of the web, live different lives and have different needs. Is it not more of a ‘truth’ that often they need more than they have and we, even many of the ‘poor’ amongst us in the West, need less?

Perhaps, when we are feeling discouraged about our ability to manifest ‘plenty’ in our lives, we might choose to spend some time thinking about what real, lasting ‘plenty’ means and why we are desiring so much more than what we need in the moment. Perhaps we might choose to acknowledge and be truly grateful for the ‘plenty’ we already do have.
