and we have been doing unschooling stuff with classes on basic electronics, geology, astronomy and chemistry... and the boy started Aikido three months ago, loves it and has already earned his yellow stripe... he's aiming for a black belt, he tells me...

Well... I've Been A Long Time Gone...
... and a lot has happened in that time...
the boy and I were homeless - in Seattle, on Vashon Island and back in Seattle... though we never had to sleep in the van or in a shelter, thanks to loving people in our lives, old friends and new...
we are now in transitional housing - we have a warm, dry, comfortable house to ourselves with our cats, with a big yard full of tall trees, in a beach-side neighbourhood just a bit north of the Seattle city limits. And we have some breathing space to rebuild our lives here, seeing the courts said I couldn't take the boy back to Australia to live...
found out a while ago that the people the boy's father hired to represent him and give evidence in court on his behalf were FATHERS' RIGHTS people.... wondered at the time what was the hidden agenda being played out, given the weirdness of these peoples' actions and attacks - now I know... I didn't stand a chance against them, especially without an attorney representing me...
and I have to say I am seriously pissy that total strangers, with an anti-woman axe to grind, have managed to interfere in our lives so much! There are things to be done about that - all in good time...
have pulled back from much of the social activism I was doing, including this blog, obviously! Much of what I was seeing going on in the world and was dealing with personally, was making me angry and bitter and cynical, and using that anger to fuel my social justice advocacy, and having that arena as a place to vent my resentment, wasn't working any longer... I had to step back and focus on our own immediate environment and needs...
and I have been doing a second go-around with breast cancer... After a year of dithering and playing around with alternative ideas regarding treatment, I finally put my hand up for some neo-adjuvant chemotherapy to shrink the tumours prior to surgery and radiation... it hasn't been much fun and the novelty really and truly has worn off!
and we have been doing unschooling stuff with classes on basic electronics, geology, astronomy and chemistry... and the boy started Aikido three months ago, loves it and has already earned his yellow stripe... he's aiming for a black belt, he tells me...

looking forward to the arrival of daughter number 2 in December, staying for a month... Haven't seen her for almost 10 years...
and so very, very grateful for all the kindred spirits in our lives, who have loved and supported us, and continue to do that, as we are walking this path...
speaking of this blog... am kinda committed to getting it back up and running... I notice that on many older posts, the embedded videos no longer work - Youtube pulled them for various reasons.... I don't have the energy right now to go and find new pieces to replace them, and I probably never will have the motivation! Sorry about that!

Forgive & Forget...
"Forgiveness, the first step and binding obligation of non-violence, hangs by a silver cord of love, high in the vault of the cosmos.
Slender and fine that thread, and woven of four sacred actions of the soul -- mnemon, anamnesis, amnesia, and amnasthakai...
Memnon -- mindfulness, that which knows.
Anamnesis -- not-not-remembering, the re-call and recitation of what is true, a form of prayer.
Amnesia -- not-remembering, the letting go of what does not serve...
Amnasthakai -- amnesty, purposely not recalling and reciting, not bringing up again what is past...
By these deep and sacred actions of the soul do the possibilities of forgiveness hang...
Tonight, breathe forgiveness...
Tonight, breathe forgiveness...
Breathe it in for all that you bear against yourself...
Breathe it out, for all that you bear against another...
This is the spiritual practice by which a soul can move toward its intentions to the path of non-violence."
I offer to all those whom I have hurt in word, deed, thought or omission my deepest regret and sorrow, and ask for your forgiveness...
And I offer love and forgiveness to all those who have injured me in any way...
Seriously!

Life Is Full...
... of such delicious ironies...
Was told a few hours ago, in no uncertain terms, to leave as soon as possible from where we are staying because our presence is causing friction between the husband and wife in this 4,200sq ft house...
9 days we have been here...
They took us in (had offered any help we needed a few months ago) after we were evicted from a week-to-week place...
But they have relationship issues - serious ones - and we appear to be the trigger for them boiling to the surface...
The wife acknowledges that's what's going on, but still needs us out... not that we want to stay under this hostility...
And - 4,200sq ft they have here, with just themselves, their daughter, two cats and a puppy...
And the irony part???
Husband, wife and their child (and my boy) RIGHT NOW are putting up Christmas decorations INCLUDING the piece de resistance - a humble wooden nativity scene... you know - the hut/stable where Jesus was born/laid in a manger because there was no room in the inn?
The extent of the unconscious hypocrisy is hysterically hilarious...
"Life is a tragedy for those who feel, and a comedy for those who think..."

Postscript (added 1 December 2011):
Well we are now staying with a social activist friend and her family on Vashon Island...
Gorgeous views - quiet, the water and the green close by, just as I asked for...
One cat here; the other playing hard to get, hiding in the ceiling of the house we had been staying at... expect to retrieve him tomorrow...
"Man of the House" packed us up yesterday afternoon (while we were out!), and helped move our gear across to the island...
Saying goodbye, he apologised for being an "arsehole", as he put it... said he didn't really know why he behaved as he did and then came up with a whole bunch of 'reasons'...
Meanwhile, earlier in the day, myself and the "woman of the house" had had this email exchange:
"As I told P this morning, we are moving on today...
We are going to stay with an activist colleague on Vashon until the Dec 16 court hearing which will determine if I can go back to Australia WITH C...
We'll be moving late afternoon/early evening as my colleague is a teacher and has a meeting after school; she would prefer that we go across to Vashon together since I have not met her family...
She anticipates being in West Seattle around 5.15pm...
I dont know if P still wants to help move our stuff, seeing the location will be Vashon...
I can take us, our clothes and the cats today, plus some items can go in my friend's car; if it is possible to put the rest of our gear in your garage, I can come across tomorrow (Thursday) and pick them up...
Thanks for giving us a roof to shelter under for the past week and a half...
I am sorry for the inconvenience and conflict our presence exacerbated - if I had known you and P had these issues and that our presence would further fuel them, I would not have said "yes" to staying here...
Sahila"

"Great Sahila, I’m glad you have what sounds like a nice place until mid-December. P would be glad to help load up for the ferry trip and then unload at the other end. I told him the timeframe, so he may stay at work a little later, and show up around 2:30.
No apologies necessary or warranted. My situation with P was the same before and will remain after. No big. He is rather brittle. At times generous to a fault, then overreacts the other direction whereas I am quite resolute. Privacy is obviously something we value greatly, and you can see how busy our schedules are.
I will probably see you around 4 today.

So, we're all happy(?) and I guess that's the end of that...

It Hurts When...
... your young son states/asks you (for the second time in about six months): "Mum, we're poor, aren't we?"
and so, you go through the motions of describing just how "rich" you really are - you slept in a warm, dry place last night, you have food in the fridge, you have clothes, hot water for a shower, the two cats (and even enough food to last them into tomorrow), a car with a tiny bit of gas still in it, friends, books, toys, a computer, DVDs and music...
and you say that no matter what happens, people are important, not things, and that wherever you are, wherever you end up, you will have each other and the people that care about you...
and at the same time, you swallow the bile that rises in your throat and the anger that's swirling in your belly, as you think about the boy's father, who, because he can't stand the fact that he is no longer in control, is doing his utmost to make life difficult, to punish you for refusing to accept his abuse...
and you shake your head at the complete insanity, where this man does not realise that when he does what he does, he's hurting the child he says he loves, not you...
and that's just how it is...
PS: I have a question... Why would it be so hard to sit down - for about the 20th time in six years - and write out all the facts, events, reasons why what's being presented in court by an abusive man with narcissistic traits and schizoid tendencies, ought to be ignored, dismissed, thrown out? You would think it would get easier, pretty much formulaic with so much repetition...

If I Wasn't A Feminist...
...I'd say (today) that "Life's A Bitch"!
and that's because, while it's Friday and I usually love Fridays, I've got a bad case of the blues...
Maybe it's perimenopause clashing with pre-menstrual tension over the past few days, with a period finally starting today (three months since the last one - too much information???!)...
Maybe it's the state of the world as it presents itself to me through the lens of the web...
Maybe it's overwhelm at having to adjust to more change, yet again...
Maybe it's fear that I don't yet know how this next change is going to unfold...
Maybe it's because I have conflicting feelings about what I want and where I want to be, and I haven't figured out how to resolve that - no clear path has presented itself yet that would allow the maximum amount of happiness, with the minimum amount of effort, for us all...
Maybe it's the internal critic that's mad at me for creating some of my own problems, and then being so slow to implement solutions that are, in themselves, not difficult...
Maybe it's because I want to forgive my son's father and let go of the past AND I'm still angry and blaming him...
Maybe it's because I'd love to go back to bed with a good book and pretend I have no responsibilities and that life will take care of itself and my child while I read and sleep...
Maybe it's because I'd love to go back to bed with a good book and pretend I have no responsibilities and that life will take care of itself and my child while I read and sleep...
Maybe it's because I'm stuck in a psychological Catch-22 - mad at myself that I won't give myself permission to go back to bed with a book, because that would mean wasting more time, with the mess getting bigger... And at the same time, knowing pretty much for certain that I won't deal with much of what needs dealing with today anyway!
Maybe it's because there's not enough sweetness in my life, and I ate the last bit of chocolate yesterday!
Maybe it's because I don't know if my friends' baby boy has arrived safely in the world - no word since yesterday afternoon...
Maybe it's because the frogs' bowl needs cleaning out...
Maybe it's because our temporary laundry-bedroom is filled with mess and storage boxes that are waiting for me to deal with the "junk in the trunk" of my van... paperwork that needs sorting, filing, shredding... an energy drain that I would rather just dump because most of it has absolutely no relevance for me any more, to the NOW... and all I want to do is live in the NOW... but the 'system', 'society' says we can't just live in the NOW... that the past and future are important... but the past and future DON'T EXIST...
Maybe it's because every day here now, I can feel that our being here is an issue for one member of the household, and the sooner we leave the sooner that person's peace of mind will be restored... so there's pressure to leave, conflicting with internal resistance at yet another change, and the pressure of not feeling 'ready'...
Maybe it's because I'm feeling pressure to get rid of all of our stuff in storage - in some ways, more "junk in the trunk" and an energy and financial drain... and yet I am hanging on to it...
Maybe it's because it's a week or so until school starts, and I don't yet know if or what school I shall send my son to, or whether I can/will follow through with the idea of unschooling him...
Maybe it's because if I do send him to school, he'll need a ridiculously large amount of "school supplies" that will take time, energy and money to acquire, most of which won't really help him "learn" anyway...
Maybe it's the weight of worrying about whether I'm putting in enough time and energy and attention into raising/being present with my child... maybe I should spend the energy I put into social change activities and helping other people into our own/his life...
Maybe it's a combination of happiness, jealousy and envy that one of my friends has just divested herself of most of her belongings and flown off into the sunset for a new adventure; maybe it's worry for her that when I did the same 7.5 years ago, the adventure proved to be the most difficult journey of my life, to date...
Maybe it's because I feel I need a haircut, but am torn between getting it cut or persevering with growing it longer, and with going back to colour it despite the time, effort and money that would go into keeping that up... GREY is sexy - LIFE is GREY, after all, not black or white, or blue, or brown, or red, or yellow, or green!
Maybe it's because a 5-year old yesterday asked me why I was fat; I told him people come in all shapes and sizes, and I am short and round... He said it was OK, not to worry because I was only medium fat - that a whale was fatter than me!
Maybe, maybe, maybe it's none of these and/also/or a myriad of other things...
Maybe it just is...
PS: and in this very moment of now, my son and I are warm, dry, fed, clothed, clean, housed and in the company of loving human beings... LIFE IS GOOD...
PPS: 11 April 2012... Peri-menopause still sucks!
It's a Wednesday, not a Friday, AND I'm in the same space pretty much as in this post...
same scenario, different geographic location...
the baby arrived safe and sound...
friend had her adventure in the sun (minus a happy ending) and is on her way back to Seattle...
van still full...
boy not in school...
waiting for judge's decision as to whether I can take boy back to Australia...
AND we are never in the same space...
we are journeying up a spiral...
I am not the same person I was when I wrote this post...

2/3 Done...
Thanks to wonderful friends Chris, Charra, Brant, Cecilia and Paul, 2/3 of the furniture and boxes are gone, with the rest being done in slow time this week and a final push next Sunday, though I've paid our share of the rent until the end of the month...
Spent last night happy in the house we are minding for the next few months...
Though it will take a bit of getting used to the multiple clocks chiming cheerily on the 1/4 hour, the 1/2 hour, the 3/4 hour and the full hour!!!
Though it will take a bit of getting used to the multiple clocks chiming cheerily on the 1/4 hour, the 1/2 hour, the 3/4 hour and the full hour!!!
Woke up today, very tired and quite sore... I feel old!
Will bring the cats and more of the food over this evening...
Lots of reflection happening in the process, and lots to write about...
But that's going to have to wait for a day or so, until I move my computer over...
Since we're no longer 'living' at the old address, the housemates have turned the heater way down low, down to 55F in the daytime, and my fingers are too cold to type much...
The lovely owner at the house we are minding, has the thermostat set at 72F for the daytime...
I'll be paying for the oil and power we use, but it's so nice not to have to argue about what's a reasonable temperature for comfortable Seattle winter living...
And one of the former housemates has just come through the family room (at the old house) to ask if I intend to use the internet here for much longer, implying I shouldn't because I'm no longer paying for it... I said no, I've organised internet service at the new house starting tomorrow... I'll offer $5 for my share of the internet over 7 days, if they like!...
This morning, I've taken care of about half of the administration/personal business stuff related to moving house...
I try not to think about all the hassle and the circumstances that have surrounded all these moves in the US...
Otherwise, I just get plain pissed off... and that doesn't get me and Connor anywhere...

Shooting Myself In The Foot...
On a purely personal note today, I have become increasingly conscious of how often I "shoot myself in the foot" and take actions - or more accurately NOT TAKE ACTIONS - that result in more 'difficulty' in my life than is necessary...
Compared to 4 billion or so other souls on the planet, my son and I are living well; we have somewhere warm and dry to live, clothes, food, transport and people around who care what happens to us...
Compared to others who are similarly or more privileged, there's a lot in my life that could be 'improved'.
We are living day-to-day financially which is stressful and not how it has to be. And that's because of several factors:
- Politically and personally, I find it almost impossible now, to participate in the current economic and social paradigm - it's anti-life, dysfunctional and toxic...
- Because of that, I'm choosing not to work in the corporate madhouse (though some might say that with 25% unemployment in the US that is not a choice I - as an older, over-qualified, woman - am making necessarily)...
- The journey here in the US has been completely intense, complicated and difficult, comprised of getting into and then getting out of a situation of domestic violence and experiencing cancer... This has taken much of my focus and a great deal of energy. And it doesn't seem likely to end anytime soon, as my son's father continues to play power and control games (mostly now around money) and I go back to court tomorrow to ask for the renewal of a Protection Order for yet another year...
- Single parenting my son takes time, focus and energy that would otherwise be available for money-making activities. I don't have the same amount of energy as I did when I was raising my first family, and I choose to give my son first call on the energy I do have - everything and everyone else has to queue up behind him...
BUT.... there are things I can do that would both add to the positive in the world and bring in cash...
I have plans to start the Purple Dove Foundation to raise money for and awareness about (and the eventual eradication of) the horror of domestic violence.
The Foundation would do what the Komen Foundation does in the field of breast cancer - raises billions of dollars and then distributes it to organisations working to cure breast cancer and to individuals living through the experience - basically acting as a clearing house for funds...
The Komen Foundation is successful because many people can't deal with facing their own mortality... fund raising for disease-fighting is quite easy...
But most people don't want to talk about domestic violence - it's the nasty little secret thing that happens to other people, behind closed doors in the house down the street...
And that's just not true... it happens in one-in-five households and is probably happening to your next-door-neighbour as I write and you read this... or it's been happening in your house, or in the house where you grew up...
It happened in my house where I grew up, though I didn't know what it was and that it was not 'normal'... and a form of it happened in my first marriage, though again I didn't recognise it for what it was until much later...
Did you know:
- One in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime.
- An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year.
- 85% of domestic violence victims are women.
- Historically, females have been most often victimized by someone they knew.
- Females who are 20-24 years of age are at the greatest risk of nonfatal intimate partner violence.
- Most cases of domestic violence are never reported to the police.
I've had this in my head for five years now - a fully fledged, perfectly sound, perfectly viable idea that only needs implementation...
And I have begun taking small steps to make it a reality...
BUT... something inside holds me back from taking the big strides forward necessary to make this idea really come alive in 3D...
My inner critic says it's because I'm lazy and afraid of failure, all talk and no action...
I know I'm not lazy - I've worked hard all my life...
I know I'm not all talk and no action - I've done things in my life that have changed reality for quite a few people. I've walked the talk and put my money where my mouth is...
Am I afraid of failure? I have put myself out there, laid it all on the line in the past and sometimes that has cost me a lot AND I kept going, no matter what, because it was the right thing to do...
Am I afraid of exposing myself, telling the story over and over again, perhaps being pitied or shunned?
When I teach - in the personal growth/spiritual arenas - I always use personal experience as the main teaching tool... after all, I'm the only person/thing I am an expert on... and being prepared to be vulnerable and to take myself down to my students' "level" gives them permission to open up and share... the most amazing learning/shifts happen all around...
I believe in equalising/leveling the playing field...that's what's real and takes the "power over" element out of teaching/sharing/nurturing.
I tell my students (and my kids and the kids I teach electives to at school) that in some aspects of life, I'm a master, in some I'm a novice, in some an apprentice, and in some a scholar, as are they... And in some areas they're the masters whereas I'm still a novice or an apprentice...
Am I afraid I wasn't really a "victim" because I got out before it got really bad - I didn't end up in the hospital with broken bones, that I'm just a fraud?
Just as I wasn't really a "victim" of cancer because I 'only' had a mastectomy and reconstruction - I didn't need radiation and chemotherapy, my hair didn't fall out, I didn't spend days huddled over the toilet puking up my guts?
I know, quite ridiculous really, but that's how the uncontrolled mind works for many of us, especially women...
Am I afraid of success? What would the world look like with no violence in it?
Maybe I'm just plain mad, mad, mad, having a huge temper tantrum that my life isn't all peaches and cream... a case of sitting on the pity-pot crying "why me, why me?"... What is it they say? "Shit, or get off the pot already"!
Maybe I'm just plain mad at my supposedly intelligent self, for having made certain choices that have gotten me/us to this place...
And yet, I know this particular section of my life's journey was 'meant to be'... I don't think any other experience would have led me to recognise what was the pattern of abusive relationships the female line of my family has endured, for generations, and to decide "It Stops With Me"...
And it has stopped with me... my daughters and sons now have knowledge I didn't when I was young and they need not make the same dysfunctional choices I did, as my mother and grandmothers did before me...
Indigenous people say that what you heal in this life time, heals seven generations into the past and seven generations into the future, so maybe there was a worthwhile point to all this after all!
But there is no complete peace in that; there's still anger, rage even, at the men who carried out this abuse - sexual, physical, emotional.
To them - dead and alive - I say: "I understand your pain and why you did what you did... You did the best you could with what you had, as we all do...
BUT - please, accept, own and live with your guilt instead of denying it... live with your guilt as I have to do with mine, for not protecting my children as I should have, just as my mother did not protect me..."

Maybe I (still) want to be rescued - have the proverbial white knight come galloping in on his charger, solving all my problems, whisking me and my son off to the always sunny land of happiness ever after, flowing with milk and honey, all rainbows and cherubs playing heavenly music!Maybe I'm just resistant to change in my own life...good at helping others handle/achieve change in their lives, but when it comes to my own little world, Life has to drag me kicking and screaming through the hedge backwards!
Maybe my ambivalence about being in this country is what's getting in the way... If I put in more energy creating something, that means on some level that I'm committing to staying here, in a place I dislike... I like, love even, many of the people in my life here, but this society gives me the creeps... I want to go home, but where is home now?
Or maybe I'm just tired... too much needs attention in this world and I'd rather just sit back, take care of me and mine and let all the rest go to hell in a handcart...
