There's something to be said for Kitchen Table Wisdom - you know, like in the old days when people sat around the kitchen table after a meal and talked about life, the universe and the meaning of it all - as well as the gossip doing the rounds in town...

Well, that's what this place is - a place to share common wisdom, thoughts and feelings about things important and unimportant, that bring us joy, laughter and happiness and that trouble, sadden, confuse and anger us ...

What I write here is what's 'real' for me. It won't always be PC or 'nice'. We're missing out on true connection and chances to grow and change because there's too little authenticity, too little honesty, too much holding back what we really feel and mean.

Welcome to my world...

I used to have a copyright claim here, but I've removed it...

Ideas don't belong to anyone -

they come to those who are receptive and are to be used for the well being of all...

I find images and movies and music all over the web

and I use them to accent/expand on my thoughts and understandings...

Counting To 12...

Now we will count to twelve
and we will all keep still.

For once on the face of the earth,
let's not speak in any language;
let's stop for one second,
and not move our arms so much.

It would be an exotic moment
without rush, without engines;
we would all be together
in a sudden strangeness.

Fisherman in the cold sea
would not harm whales
and the man gathering salt
would look at his hurt hands.

Those who prepare green wars,
wars with gas, wars with fire,
victories with no survivors,
would put on clean clothes
and walk about with their brothers
in the shade, doing nothing.

What I want should not be confused
with total inactivity.
Life is what it is about;
I want no truck with death.

If we were not so single-minded
about keeping our lives moving,
and for once could do nothing,
perhaps a huge silence
might interrupt this sadness
of never understanding ourselves
and of threatening ourselves with death.
Perhaps the earth can teach us
as when everything seems dead
and later proves to be alive.

Now I'll count up to twelve
and you keep quiet and I will go.

Incommunicado...

Wow - three days without the internet due to cables being downed by ice and snow, and the world is still here and it appears I haven't missed much!

Really weird watching post office and UPS workers valiantly braving the ice and snow, risking life and limb to keep the mail and parcels delivered - crazy... as though it matters that a letter or parcel is delayed for a couple of days...

Played UNO with the boy and housemates - fun...

More conversation happening...

Some twiddling of thumbs and consideration given to catching up on paperwork, and getting the knitting out of the back of my van... didn't happen!

Realising how much of my communication is with people I have never met!

Boy said he was sorry that the TV/Netflix was down, but not that the internet was because I spent much more time with him.... hmmmmm... have been thinking about the issue of balance and being present to and for him lately... a bit of a shock to have the truth that he is feeling neglected come out of his mouth...

AND he also is having a hard time with being an only child - me being with him 100% of the time is not possible nor necessarily desirable/healthy and no amount of playdates with other children ever satisfy him...

Realising how much slower and sane the world was before computers and the internet...

Getting back to listening to the radio, and enjoying it very much - though HATE, HATE, HATE that I have to listen to evil GATES FOUNDATION advertisements on National Public Radio...

Back on line now, and no more excuses not to move certain parts of my life forward and to take care of outstanding business!!!

Watch out world!

Summing It All Up In 2min:40sec

One version of current reality...

This is all being done in our names - and apparently we all agreed to this...

I don't remember anyone asking me if I wanted this... did anyone ask you?

And here is the reality for those on the ground:

And I kinda feel I have earned the right to post pacifist comments.   I really understand the issue.   I spent 18 years as a military wife, watching grown men get excited about spending taxpayer money on more elaborate, efficient tools and machines for killing people, and my elder son is serving in the New Zealand Army...

When Neutrality Equals Complicity

I was challenged on the Save Seattle Schools blog (link on the sidebar) a couple of days ago, as to whether I ever have a neutral gear?

And the answer is: "No, I don't have a 'neutral' gear when it comes to  education 'deform' and all the many aliases and disguises it comes under/uses to attempt to slink under the wire"...

In my opinion, it's immoral and obscene... and completely undemocratic... half a dozen uber rich people have decided what public education should look like and they're going around using their money and influence to ensure they get it to be that way (and to make sure they and their friends make mountains of money in the process)... and we and our kids are mere pawns...

And here in Seattle it's being pushed through regardless of process or law...

I don't think I have ever encountered anything more arrogant and completely disrespectful in my life...

And this is not about creating a great education system that benefits all kids... in fact, it's not about the kids at all...

It's about oligarchy, it's about privatising the last of the public institutions in this country, it's about exercising complete power and control, it's abusive, it's nothing more than a nasty,  horrible, disgusting example of domestic violence, played out in the societal and economic arena...

And one of the side benefits for those pushing the deform agenda is all the public taxpayer money there is to be siphoned off into their own back pockets...

So I do what I do to highlight where individuals, groups and institutions come from and what their agenda really is, because it seems to me that many people in this town (and country) are not informed...

And if they are, they seem not to get the ramifications of what they support, in the broader picture... or they're sitting in total denial, with their fingers in their ears humming/singing "I can't hear you"... and I can't/won't shut up while that's going on...

There are groups all over this country fighting this deform agenda...

Here's a sample:

Parents Across America
Parents and Kids Against Standardised Testing
Support Our Schools
Uniting for Kids
SOS Million Teacher March
Fair Testing
Stop RTTT
Schools Matter
NYC Public School Parents

All acknowledge what is really going on...

Speak Nicely and Say Nothing?

I've written many times before that the demand for 'civil discourse' misses the point and is more often than not a demand that people with uncomfortable things to say simply "shut up".   See here, from another writer:

" There is an unfortunate tendency to assume that civil discourse has occurred whenever two or more people are nice to each other, say something, and don’t get into an argument. That is misleading on all three counts.

Civil discourse has not occurred if boundaries have not been crossed.

Civil discourse has not occurred if boundaries that define spaces of sound and spaces of silence have not been recognized and honored.

Where there is no argument, there is no civil discourse.

We must openly disagree if we are to discover what binds us together and what we can accomplish. We must talk to each other in order to disagree. We must speak honestly as well as decently, which means that we may sometimes need to say unpleasant things about each other. And about ourselves."
