The "It's Not Valentine's Day" Post...
...where I say "I love you" and "thank you" to life, the planet and all the wonderful beings I share this reality with...
Sending out love and respect for all the people - known and unknown - who are passionate about, and active in, creating a better world for all...
Sending out love to my children - Ellen, Sarah, Callum and Connor...
Sending out love to the two men with whom I brought those children into the world...
Sending out love to my family of origin, especially my sister and her husband and son...
Sending out love to my family of choice - those kindred spirits who love and support me as we walk our pathways in tandem for long or short parts of the journey...
Sending out love and saying "thank you" to all the human angels who have come into my life, for brief moments or for years...

I Need Help...
... and I need it now!
I know it's a lot to ask...
AND I need some help thwarting my son's father's attempt to take custody of the boy by implying I'm an unfit mother...
This is/feels much bigger than I can handle by myself...
If you've been reading this blog, you will know this saga has been going on for six years now and I have run out of money, resources and stamina...
All the "free" or "low income" services are snowed under with more demand than they can meet...
So, if anyone knows of a Seattle, Shoreline, Vashon, South Seattle attorney who is willing to do some PRO BONO family law work, would you please let me know ASAP...
Alternatively - If you can/will help me pay a lawyer so that I keep custody of my son, I would be eternally grateful! I've been told that an attorney would want $US6000 up front to take this on...
I have a donation page set up here: KOHA - Love Offerings
With many thanks and much love... knowing that in all things, Thy will, not my will be done...

Seasonal Sense & Sensibility...
We've been having a snow "event" in Seattle over the past couple of days, and it will continue for one or two more...
This city is more used to rain - lots of it, falling relatively gently over an extended period of time ...
So when snow falls - around six inches worth over 24 hours - it's something of an "event"...
And watching the goings-on has left me with the question:
And watching the goings-on has left me with the question:
What is wrong with the American people?
They appear to think the sky will fall and earth will stop spinning on its axis if they stay home from work in a snow storm...
What programming propels people to take sleeping bags to the office, so they won't miss the next day's work if the snow storm arrives over night, as one female manager here in Seattle told a reporter she would be doing...
What huge reward or threat persuades wage slaves to leave their families to cope alone in the storm, while they don snow gear and trot, slide, crawl, off to the office to save the bottom line...
Isn't it time we got back in sync with the rhythms of the seasons?
Snow - quiet, isolating, dangerous... time to stay inside, to protect and nurture the self, to be with the people we love...
It's what our ancestors did...
Isn't it bad enough that homeless people have to survive out in the snow, without choosing to ignore the gifts and comfort given to us, and to endanger ourselves unnecessarily?
I guess the oligarchs really have got it all sewn up, really do rule when we turn our backs so thoroughly on nature and good sense...

Dysfunction...
Words from the abusive parent:
I'm only doing this for your own good.
You're stupid.
Obey your parent.
Do as I say, not as I do.
Don't talk back.
Love me, or you will live in shame.
If you refuse to love me, I will punish you.
I'm only doing this for your own good.
You're stupid.
Obey your parent.
Do as I say, not as I do.
Don't talk back.
Love me, or you will live in shame.
If you refuse to love me, I will punish you.
Words from the abusive government:
We're only doing this for the good of the people.
The smart people (us of course) will fix it.
Obey your leaders.
Do as we say, not as we do.
Don't talk back.
Love your country, or you will live in shame.
If you refuse to love your country, we will punish you.
We're only doing this for the good of the people.
The smart people (us of course) will fix it.
Obey your leaders.
Do as we say, not as we do.
Don't talk back.
Love your country, or you will live in shame.
If you refuse to love your country, we will punish you.

Beasts Of Burden...
This has been doing the rounds...
More counting for nothing, or very little...
On a personal note...
I have four children, three from my first marriage and one from my second...
My daughters in my first family were 6.5 and 4.5 years old when their brother was born...
A few weeks before his birth, we were sitting in our lounge, with their paternal grandmother, looking through family photo albums, telling stories from the children's lives...
My mother-in-law opened her mouth and said:
"I hope it's a boy this time. I like boy babies better than girls"...
I was gob-smacked...
WTF - here was a woman, telling her girl grandchildren in no uncertain terms, that they were lesser beings than boys and she really did not love them...
And then there was the time in 1990, when my father turned the responsibility/blame for his abuse of me back onto me. When I asked him why he had done what he had done when I was a baby and then again when I was older, he told me that I had brought it all on myself because I "had always been a difficult child", in contrast to my younger sister who had always been quiet and compliant. And when I asked him why he had not confronted my uncle about his abuse of me, he replied: "because he was my brother"... And I remember the stunned inner child (we all carry) inside, shouting silently: "BUT I WAS YOUR DAUGHTER!". Years later, it clicked - if he had confronted his brother on his abuse of me, he would then have had to admit and own his own actions, and he could never do that...
And then there was my first husband, who did the same thing as my father had done - transferred the responsibility for his abuse of our second daughter onto her. After we divorced, I challenged him about his behaviour. He rationalised his abuse of her by saying that from the moment she had been born, her cry had grated on him. He went on to say (having just completed some psychology papers at university) that, according to family dynamics theory, she had come into the family and taken on the role of 'scapegoat' and he was just caught in and responding to that energetic/pattern of relationship...
Bloody hell...

As You Think...
...So It Is...
I've told the universe/Divine that if it wants to send me a message, it has to do it three times, so that I know I'm not just making things up...
Well, this song came my way three times in the past 48 hours, so am posting it as an antidote to the doom and gloom stuff...
WITH THANKS TO LENORE MAREE...
I'm being reminded to live my own tag line: "As you think, so it is... Your beliefs create your reality..."
And no, I'm not saying Life is as schmaltzy as the lyrics imply, but there is beauty and love aplenty to be found... and I have lots of it expressing itself in my family and friends - I am indeed fortunate....
LYRICS:
Sunshine, lollipops and rainbows,
Everything that's wonderful is what I feel when we're together,
Brighter than a lucky penny,
When you're near the rain cloud disappears, dear,
And I feel so fine just to know that you are mine.
My life is sunshine, lollipops and rainbows,
That's how this refrain goes, so come on, join in everybody!
Sunshine, lollipops and rainbows,
Everything that's wonderful is sure to come your way
When you're in love to stay.
Sunshine, lollipops and rainbows,
Everything that's wonderful is what I feel when we're together,
Brighter than a lucky penny,
When you're near the rain cloud disappears, dear,
And I feel so fine just to know that you are mine.
My life is sunshine, lollipops and rainbows,
That's how this refrain goes, so come on, join in everybody!
Sunshine, lollipops and rainbows,
Everything that's wonderful is sure to come your way
'Cause you're in love, you're in love,
And love is here to stay
Everything that's wonderful is what I feel when we're together,
Brighter than a lucky penny,
When you're near the rain cloud disappears, dear,
And I feel so fine just to know that you are mine.
My life is sunshine, lollipops and rainbows,

Clarity - Part One...
So, let's see if I can write a couple of posts summarising all of these insights into something clear and concise and meaningful to everyone not living in my head, that doesn't take you 10 minutes to read!
First set of insights came last week, after a conversation with my housemate's daughter-in-law, about what the future holds for their family now my housemate has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, and what would be best for my son and I to do in that - stay or leave...
In that conversation, I mentioned to the daughter-in-law that my housemate and I had had a huge row over how my son and I are living in this house, about my slowness to unpack and settle, about how I am raising my son and about how the household should be maintained.
The daughter-in-law shrugged off the comments from my housemate about how we are not as neat and tidy as she would like, remarking that last time she was sick and in hospital (15 months ago, with necrotising fasciitis - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necrotizing_fasciitis - from which she nearly died, spending 3 weeks in a drug-induced coma), relatives came in and cleaned up her house of 11 years' worth of clutter and mess.
She also confirmed my views that my housemate has issues with needing to be in control... which run completely contrary to her Buddhist teachings and practice.
I had never visited my housemate's home before her illness, so I only saw the 'cleaned up' version... And she gives off this energy of being totally together and with her life all sorted out...
I had never visited my housemate's home before her illness, so I only saw the 'cleaned up' version... And she gives off this energy of being totally together and with her life all sorted out...
And that's all OK... we all have our masks and we all tell ourselves and the world the lies we must to make living with our pain and need for love and approval bearable...
But what the knowledge did for me, was put our row into context ... It showed me where I had been triggering my housemate's buttons, rubbing salt into her unhealed wounds...
I saw how my being able to live in "chaos" highlighted her discomfort with chaos.
I saw how my "mess" probably triggered feelings of shame and lack of self-forgiveness that she had allowed her own house to fall into such a state; I know I have been completely embarrassed and humiliated when friends have come to help me cope with my mess twice in my life, times when I have been overwhelmed by change.
(I'm actually quite a neat and tidy person usually - my 'chaos' usually revolves around stacks of paperwork scattered around the kitchen and my office space and piles of unfolded clean laundry!)...
And I remembered how I had reacted to a young woman from England I had living with me for three weeks a few years ago. She had a young child and was homeless because her Australian partner was abusive. I spent those weeks driving her to the relevant social agencies to get the help she needed and giving her whatever moral support I could.
At the end of three weeks, I had to ask her to move on. Not because of anything she had done to me, but because I was judging as wrong and frivolous, something really innocent she was doing to make herself feel better that cost a lot of money.
I had an unforgiven place inside myself from the past, where I spent money to make me feel better in hard times, money that pragmatic people might have said I ought to use for me and my children, for things that were a higher, more urgent priority.
And that unforgiven place, that guilt, shame and humiliation were projecting themselves out in how I was relating to my young friend. For every finger I point at someone else, there are three pointing back at me!
And that, I think, is going on for my housemate...
She and I are doing a dance about power and control. I can help her with that if she will let me, and I think that is why we have come together...
I think she was meant to 'die' during her last illness; she says she died three times and each time her lama (her teacher) brought her back from the Bardo.
My shamanic self thinks she stayed on the planet because her daughter (20) is not ready to be an adult.
My housemate (60) has had a year to think about her own mortality, to make the normal, sensible preparations (such as wills and allocating power of attorney) and to begin to prepare her daughter to leave the nest. And she has a loving, accepting, extended family to help her with that...
None of that has been happening...
Her daughter has not been told the extent of her mother's illness, as she "freaked out" last time her mother was sick. So she gets no chance to get prepared, no chance to step up, no chance to practise being an adult while she still has her mother's support and guidance.
My housemate denies these needs and the reality of her own death happening sometime in the not very distant future...
I have purposefully not stepped forward, even to take over household tasks, so as not to enable this process of avoiding...
We have not talked at all about this situation, so my housemates probably think my actions (or inaction) confirm that I am a "fat lazy slob", but that's just how it has to be...
I haven't found an opening to begin any dialogue that might provide a space of holding for my housemate and her family. And I don't think my housemate is open to hearing what insights I have to offer, that might help her in her transition.
So, we are leaving this house as soon as an alternative presents itself - either the move to Australia or to another situation here in Seattle.
I have felt guilt about that, as though I am a rat leaving a sinking ship, but as a wise woman said to me today, my housemate's death process is not my ship leaving the harbour for places unknown, is not my voyage...

Dreams For 2011...
Late/early to bed on New Year's morning, with a couple of glasses of good red wine going through the system while enjoying pleasant times with friends...
Led to colourful dreams...
Dreams of losing my daughters - or younger versions of them - in the middle of the international district of a city that was an amalgam of Brisbane, Seattle and Singapore...
Being confused and feeling paralysed because I would have to leave my youngest son to go and find them, something I could not do... people wearing orange (second chakra, creativity, unconditional love) helping look for them...
Dreams of having my youngest son's father suddenly discovering contrition, a conscience and a generous heart of gold, there with his cheque book open as I try to give our child the best start in life possible...
Dreams of my first husband arriving at the door, wanting to put right two wrongs he committed a long time ago, one against his second daughter, and the other against me which has contributed to my less than easy financial status now...
Dreams of being in a canoe with my youngest, rowing/gliding past other boats filled with tense people paddling quite urgently in the other direction...
What do the dreams tell me about what I want and need, deep down?
I want to be near all my children as they settle and perhaps have families of their own... I miss them a lot and I don't want to be separated from them for much longer.
Taking this journey with my youngest son and his father has taken me away from them... More than that, my own journey to self-actualisation has taken me away from them - something I had to do but which has hurt and confused them in many ways...
I have a need for some kind of natural justice to prevail - for wrongs to be put right and for reconciliation to take place... and I haven't given up hope for that, despite plenty of evidence that it's not likely to happen...
I need to honour and use my own creativity to get myself out of what I sometimes feel is a deep hole that I've dug for myself; there are people there to help if I will just accept that help and my learning in this is about giving and receiving unconditional love to/from myself and others...
And finally, to keep going down my own path, even when everyone is apparently rowing the other way. It doesn't matter what other people are doing, or what they think about my choices - my soul and my intuition know where we have to go and what's right for us... We need to continue to lead our own life, going in our own direction on our own time-line...
So what am I really dreaming of, wishing for, in 2011?
- Peace and health of body, mind, heart and spirit
- Love, laughter and joy
- Sanity in the world
- Strength to stay true to myself
- Personal integrity in those areas where I'm currently not walking my talk
- The resources, personal and material, to parent my son well
- To give what I can of my gifts, time, energy and love to the outside world
- To live in sanctuary near my other children
And as I have written, so it is...
Blessings Be...

All The World Longs For Peace...
So, if all the world and all the cultures in the world and all the spiritual teachings of the world long for, call for, beg for peace, what are we going to DO to make peace real for us all?
Our leaders don't seem to want peace...
They talk about it, but nothing they do seems to end the conflict that's killing our planet and everything that lives on it...
Maybe that's because there is too much power and money in war and disease and planetary destruction...
Maybe that's because there is too much power and money in war and disease and planetary destruction...
Making peace is a personal responsibility, a personal choice, a personal ACTION...
What will you do today and every day, in your personal life, in your family, in your community, in your society, in your country, to BIRTH AND RAISE PEACE?

Whirimako Black: "E Te Kai" & "My Funny Valentine"
Two songs (in Maori) from one of my favourite New Zealand/Aotearoa (Land of the Long White Cloud) singers - Whirimako Black...
This song is about Tanimahuta - the god of the forest - and the honor of this god, the honor of food, collecting food, the source of the food, preparation, and family; also the honor of the land and where you come from. It is an old Tohue waiata (song).
